Here is an example of what you need to know to earn your White Belt:

Seigi Bushido Ryu is a distinctively Christian eclectic martial arts system that had its formation in the 1970’s. Over a period of 16 years, the system was refined and tested in the field. After scrutiny by two international organizations, it was officially sanctioned as a unique system in 1992. Seigi Bushido Ryu (the way of the righteous warrior) is sanctioned by the Global Martial Arts Federation, the World Head of Family Sokeship Council and the Gospel Martial Arts Union.

It has a solid Biblical foundation, not only tracing the history of the martial arts to an Old Testament origin, but also ensuring that Biblical knowledge and growth are evident at all levels of rank advancement. Academic as well as physical expectations are stringent as students progress through the belt levels. A black belt in this system is a well balanced individual (spiritually, mentally, and physically) with a strong self confidence and purpose in life.

The system incorporates elements from a variety of styles to provide the practitioner with a versatile “tool bag” from which to draw should the need arise to defend oneself. The forms are mainly form Tae Kwon Do (Chung Do Kwan), with advanced belts also including Kenpo Karate forms. Atemi is utilized to maximize the effectiveness of striking techniques. Students learn jujitsu and tuite to restrain aggressors and elements from Hapkido and Aikido are woven into the release move. Judo skills are taught from proper falls and rolling.

Can a Christian partake in the martial arts?

Among the majority of conservative Christians today, this question would raise many eyebrows. Many believe that the martial arts originate with eastern religion and cultures called the occult. What if the martial arts originated in 2200.b.c. with a man named Abram? “And when Abram heard that his nephew was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house and pursued them unto Dan. And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.” (Gen. 14:14-15) Here, Scripture states that Abram (later called Abraham) had three hundred and eighteen trained servants. The Hebrew word used here for “servants” does not occur anywhere else in the Hebrew Bible; it is employed in early Egyptian documents to indicate the hired soldiers of Palestinian chiefs during that period. In other words, these “servants” were Abram’s army! Scripture says that they were all born in Abram’s house, so that indicates that he would have trained them in their fighting techniques and also in the worship of his God, El Elyon, The Most High God. In the days of Abram, obviously they had no guns or modern weapons. It is probable that they trained with sticks and their bare hands; exactly the training that martial arts today is famous for.

“Proper and authentic martial arts training involves the development of three areas of the individual. The spiritual, mental, and physical dimension of each person must be challenged and grown in parallel to ensure the proper balance of the martial artist…. The spiritual aspect must be foremost, as it provides the moral system with which the skills will be used”.  This truth is held in uttermost importance in every religion and martial arts style, regardless of whether or not the basis for the statement is Scripture or the occult. Obviously, every religion acknowledges the importance of reaching the soul and spirit of the person in order to affect their mental and physical aspects as well. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, “ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." The guidance of the Holy Spirit is indeed crucial to developing a solid, balanced, and healthy martial artist.

In addition to the personal growth of the martial artist, in Christian styles, the emphasis is not placed on violence or fighting. The emphasis is placed upon witnessing and presenting the Gospel to others. Martial arts is used as the vehicle by which to attract the unsaved to class; however, once there, the student is presented with the good news of Christ’s salvation and extended the opportunity to take Christ as his or her very own personal Lord and Savior.  This is emphasized at every belt level with the need to memorize many scripture passages and faith techniques to achieve these levels.
